framed: 65.5 x 49.8 cm.; 25¾ x 19⅝ in.
Possibly sale, Madrid, Ansorena, 22 January 1981, lot 77 (according to a handwritten inscription on the reverse);
Anonymous sale, Madrid, Bayeu, 15 October 2024, lot 52 (as follower of Giuseppe Cesari);
Where acquired.
This composition closely relates to two paintings by Giuseppe Cesari, called Cavaliere d'Arpino (1568–1640), in the Musée du Louvre, Paris,1 and at Christ Church, Oxford.2 Another version, attributed to Arpino's workshop by Herwarth Röttgen,3 is at Apsley House, London.4
