Description

The Who

Gold record presented by the RIAA for Tommy, ca. 18 August 1969

Gold record and plaque (overall 495 x 395 mm) with white linen mat; some rubbing to paper labels, stray brown spots and dampstain to lower right corner of mat. Framed and glazed; not examined out of frame.

The gold record for The Who's breakthrough album. Their fourth record, Tommy was arguably the first rock opera—a term coined by the band's manager Kit Lambert, as Townshend was searching for a form beyond the standard rock format—and charts the story of the titular character's traumatic childhood experiences and subsequent dissociative state. Pete Townshend wrote the record after encountering the work of the yogi Meher Baba, seeking to represent his teachings through his music.
