8vo (230 x 140 mm). Half-titles, presentation leaf signed by the House and Senate Library Committee Chairmen tipped in before title; foxing primarily to preliminary leaves. Original dyed sheep, boards stamped in blind, spines with raised bands in six compartments, third gilt-lettered, edges stained red, marbled endpapers, signed by Fillmore ("Millard Fillmore | Oct. 17th. 1853-") in pencil on front free endpaper; rubbing and soiling, chipping to spine bands, endleaves foxed, early ownership signature to front endpaper. In custom clamshell case. 


First edition, presented to Millard Fillmore on behalf of the South Carolina Legislature


Published shortly after Calhoun's death, the present work is regarded as "an original contribution to the history of political theory" (ANB).
