2 volumes, 8vo (235 x 152 mm). Publisher’s blue cloth, Truman’s signature gilt-stamped in facsimile on upper covers, spine labels printed in black and gold, top edges gilt. Publisher’s card slipcases with side labels.
First editions, inscribed and signed by Truman to George Elsey, a member of the Truman White House Staff. Vol. I is inscribed on the half title “To Honorable George Elsey | from | Harry Truman 5/5/56." The label on the slipcase is additionally inscribed in Truman’s hand: “Hon George M. Elsey.” Vol. II is warmly inscribed on the half-title: “To Honorable George M Elsey | with affectionate regards | and with great appreciation | of his friendship & support | Harry Truman | Independence | Jan. 6, 1956.” The slipcase label is additionally inscribed: “To Hon. George M. Elsey | From Harry Truman.” Elsey was assistant to Presidential Advisor Clark Cllifford. A highly respected member of the Truman Administration, Elsey is often cited in many biographies and histories relating to President Truman.
