Dr. Richard Mead (1673-1754), London (according to an old inscription attached to the back of the frame: from Dr. Mead's Collection / esteemed one of the most capital Castigliones in England. The King has larger compositions, i.e. with many more figures but none better or more finished indeed I think none so good),
probably his estate sale, London, Langford, 13-28 January 1755, possibly lot 59 or 61 (21 January 1755) or lot 62 (22 January 1755)
