This unusual thangka of Shakyamuni includes a begging bowl (patra) and a monk’s ringing staff (khakkhara) at his right side. Compare a Shakyamuni Buddha (HAR item no. 39), attributed to the Khyenri tradition, possibly from Eastern Tibet, and dated to the second half of the 17th century in Marylin M. Rhie and Robert A. F. Thurman, Worlds of Transformation: Tibetan Art of Wisdom and Compassion, New York, 1999, cat. no. 2.
