the slender tapering baluster body rising from a slightly recessed base to broad shoulders ending in a narrow neck with tapering conical mouth, covered overall in an ivory slip, incised around the body with stylised peony flowers and leaves above a band of incised upright lotus petals, the shoulders with boldly painted peony leaves and flowers

The combination of painting and carving is characteristic of a small group of meiping bottles of this classic shape, and can be seen, for example, on three pieces illustrated in Yutaka Mino, Freedom of Clay and Brush through Seven Centuries in Northern China. Tz'u-chou Type Wares, 960 - 1600 AD, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, 1980, pl. 72 and figs. 187 and 188, the former in the Art Institute of Chicago, the other two in Japanese private collections, one illustrated again in colour in Mikami Tsugio, ed., Sekai tōji zenshū/Ceramic Art of the World, vol. 13: Ryō, Kin, Gen/Liao, Chin and Yüan Dynasties, Tokyo, 1981, pl. 18; another in the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, is published in Haku to koku no kyōen/Charm of Black and White Ware: Transition of Cizhou Type Wares, catalogue of an exhibition at the Osaka Municipal Museum of Art, Osaka, 2002, no. 79. All these meiping, however, have the central band decorated by a carved design or inscription reserved against a combed ground
