Album of two-hundred carte-de-visite photograph portraits and views, 1860s


4to (291 x 220mm.), 200 cartes-de-visite, some portraits coloured by hand, window mounted recto and verso in 25 thick card mounts, contemporary descriptive 4-page manuscript ink list in French of all the photographs in the album loosely inserted, contemporary embossed red calf gilt, brass clasp and catch, gilt edges, extremities rubbed


A FINE COLLECTION OF CARTE-DE-VISITE PHOTOGRAPHS OF ALGERIA including images produced in Algiers, Bône (modern day Annaba) and Constantine. Over three quarters of the cartes-de-visite comprise individual or group portraits, with the remaining images being topographical and architectural views. Most of the photographs are captioned and some dated on the reverse. The accompanying manuscript list provides the names of many of the sitters and details of locations.


The sitters include portraits of men, women and children of all ranks.
