Description

A CARVED STONE STELE OF AVALOKITESHVARA

SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY

南宋 石雕觀音菩薩碑

46.7 cm, 18⅜ in.

The iconography and style of this figure of Avalokiteshvara, specifically the seated posture and treatment of the robes, is reminiscent of that on qingbai figures created at Jingdezhen in the Southern Song dynasty.  A figure found in 1964 in the foundations of a Jin dynasty pagoda at Fengtai, Beijing is now preserved in the Capital Museum, Beijing, and is illustrated in Zhongguo wenwu jinghua daxidian - taoci juan, Hong Kong, 1995, p. 290, no. 405.
