Richard von Kauffmann (1849-1908);

his posthumous sale, Paul Cassirer, Berlin, 1917, lot 186a;

Lilly von Schnitzler (1889-1981), Frankfurt am Main

Another version of the medallion showing the head of Christ in profile is housed in the British Museum (inv. no. BNK,ItM.1), catalogued as Bologna, circa 1530. The elaborate architectural pax in which it is set, however, appears to have its origin north of the Alps. Incorporating scroll ornaments and caryatid saints, it may possibly follow a design by Cornelis Floris (1514-1575).
