The vigorous movement seen in this charging horseman shows a compelling affinity with works by the so-called Master of the Bull Hunt. The appearance of the horse is remarkably close to that in the anonymous master's Bull Hunt in the Suermondt-Ludwig Museum, Aachen (op. cit., fig. 67). Compare also the warrior's drapery to this and other groups associated with the Master. The Master of the Bull Hunt has been identified with various sculptors in the past, including Francesco Fanelli; more recently it has been proposed that he was active in 17th-century Naples.
