We are grateful to Dr Fred G. Meijer for proposing the attribution to Sanders on the basis of digital images. This portrait may be compared to Sanders' signed and dated works of 1640, including the Portrait of a gentleman recently sold at Hargesheimer, Düsseldorf, in which the execution of the sitter's face is highly comparable, as is the depiction of the wide, flat lace collar and the man's pose.1 The rather distinctive treatment of the sitter's hands here is also reminiscent of those in Sanders' Portrait of a girl, likewise dated 1640, last with William Doyle Galleries, New York,2 and the later Portrait of a lady, dated 1651, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.3
