Paintings depicting a plethora of exotic animals together were popular throughout the seventeenth century in the Netherlands. The subject was championed by artists such as Roelandt Savery and Jan Brueghel the Elder, and his pupil Jacob Bouttats (who was working in Antwerp around 1700) to whose works the present panel is comparable.
