Description

Château Lafite 1961

Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé

Good level, new label, original embossed vintage chateau cork 1961 partly legible, new embossed metal capsule, prooftag; Bon niveau, étiquette neuve, bouchon du château estampillé du millésime 1961 partiellement lisible, nouvelle capsule métallique estampillé, prooftag

In 2016 from double magnum, it was beside the 1959 in the same format, a rare occurrence. The 1959 was richer, thicker and more mouthfilling, but the 1961 revels in scent, sweetness and elegance, with a spiciness that is intriguing and a gentleness now that lingers long on the palate. The intensity is in the persistence, the breed in the terroir. Serena Sutcliffe, MW

Provenance

Legends from Château Lafite | The Collection of a Rothschild Family Member | From Private and Ex-Château Cellars: Lots 1-40: Ex Château, Direct from the cellars of Lafite:

The first part of this collection comes directly from the cellars of Château Lafite Rothschild, having only recently been removed for this exceptional sale, since bottling.

Maintained in immaculate condition since bottling, these wines encompass some of the greatest vintages in the estate’s history — from the legendary 1870 pre-phylloxera year through the remarkable 1895, to post-war icons such as 1945 and 1949, represented here in exceptional breadth, and extending through to the celebrated 1982 vintage. Amongst the highlights, is a unique assortment vintage case specially created for this sale, bringing together some of the greatest years of Lafite — 1928, 1945, 1949, 1953, 1955 and 1982.

Originally in “tiré-bouché”, all these bottles were labelled, and capsuled specifically for this sale, with every lot meeting the highest standards of authenticity and traceability including prooftag. Bottles that were recorked during the château’s historical or more recent recorking sessions are duly indicated where applicable. All bottles are packed in new engraved original banded wooden cases
