Description
Château Lafite 1928
Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé
Excellent level, new label, embossed vintage chateau cork 1928: recorked in 2013 and topped up (with wine from the same vintage) at Château Lafite Rothschild, new embossed metal capsule, prooftag; Excellent niveau, étiquette neuve, bouchon du château estampillé du millésime 1928 : reconditionné en 2013 et remis à niveau (avec du vin du même millésime) au Château Lafite Rothschild, nouvelle capsule métallique estampillé, prooftag
A book could be written about this wine. At home in 2006, it had a crumbly original cork but a high level, which was interesting in itself. Deep colour, absolutely Lafite on the nose, fruity and lingering. Big wine, true top Pauillac. It remained very unchanging in the glass, a feature of pasteurisation. (You could compare this with Cheval Blanc 1945, half of which was pasteurised but which can be very good - however, this particular bottle of Lafite 1928 topped it.) Real cassis heart to it. The tannin was completely in balance and the low alcohol of this time meant that you down a bottle à deux and barely notice any effect. No perceptible volatile acidity. A great experience. We drank it with venison, sweetened with redcurrant jelly. In 2009, it had the inimitable Lafite scent with extra blackcurrant leaves. Great, spicy taste and utter drinkability. There is still lots of glycerol remaining in the centre. Serena Sutcliffe, MW
