A Kazak Karachopt rug, West Caucasus, second half 19th century

The gently abrashed green ground supports the classic four-and-one medallion Karachopt design. Noteworthy are the octagonal C-gul motifs in the main medallion and the light aubergine of the boxes enclosing the pendant hooked 'trees', a colour which also appears in several of the leaves in the border.
