‘… The harem (?)’

Theodore Deck (1823-91) started to explore the Iznik style in his ceramic practice by 1856 having studied works of this type in the Musee de Cluny in Paris. His amazement in the expansive combinations of floral patterns in Iznik designs are evident in his work. He used both Ming early fifteenth century blue and white prototypes as well as the traditional Iznik style, and exhibited Iznik-style wares at the London Exhibition of 1862. Rosewater sprinklers, sometimes used together with incense-burners, played an important role during social gatherings and religious ceremonies.
