The present "Sculpture Front" wall cabinet is a remarkable example of the iconic design style developed by Paul Evans in the 1960s. A master craftsman of the Post-war American Studio Craft movement, Evans developed a groundbreaking visual language that fused form, function and artistic expression. His work during the 1960s explored the boundary between furniture and sculpture, and the present lot is a premier example of this fusion. The cabinet’s doors are made from welded steel which presents a symmetrical geometric pattern of alternating surface treatments. The spaces are either deep gold or russet red and are welded with different surface patterns creating a rich, multi-layered and striking appearance rarely seen in design until this time. Each cabinet produced is unique and assiduously crafted. This body of work was highly influential to the furniture industry and established Evans as one of the leading furniture designers of his time. His welded cabinets remain highly sought after and are recognized as some of the most important works of American furniture design from the mid-20th century. The present lot stands out among "Sculpture Front" cabinets as a more compact and uncommon example, presenting a distinct chance to acquire a refined and distinctive "Sculpture Front" wall cabinet.
