A fine guan-type archaistic handled vase, Seal mark and period of Yongzheng | 清雍正　仿官釉古銅式出戟壺　《大清雍正年製》款

The shape of the vase is inspired by archaic bronze wine containers, lei, from the Shang to Western Zhou periods. See one from the Metropolitan Museum of Art collection (accession no. 59.194), illustrated online on the museum’s website.

It appears that this shape was first reinterpreted in the Yongzheng period, and quite a few examples were produced, mostly in monochrome glazes and underglaze blue. A pair of celadon examples is in the Seikado Bunko Art Museum, and illustrated in Qing Dynasty Porcelain, Tokyo, 2006, pp. 102, pls 99 and 100; and a sky-blue glazed vase in the Beijing Palace Museum is illustrated in Selected Porcelain of the Flourishing Qing Dynasty at the Palace Museum, Beijing, 1994, p. 215.

At auctions, a Ru-type example from Yamanaka & Co. was sold at Poly Beijing, 5th December 2021, lot 5015. Compare also several blue-and-white examples decorated with floral scrolls, including one sold at Christie’s New York, 23rd March 2012, lot 2020; one at Christie’s Hong Kong, 30th November 2024, lot 2826; and another Qianlong example sold in these rooms, 26th October 2003, lot 143. Other Qianlong examples include a smaller archaistic bronze‑imitation vase from the Meiyintang Collection, sold in these rooms, 5th October 2011, lot 19; and a flambe‑glazed vase sold in our New York rooms, 4th June 1986, lot 137.

此造型創焼於雍正一朝，多以單色釉及青花紋樣呈現，現存作例稀少。日本靜嘉堂文庫美術館藏粉青釉對例，見《靜嘉堂藏清朝瓷器：景德鎮官窯の美》，東京，2006年，頁102，圖版99及100。北京故宮博物院藏一天藍釉瓶例，載於《故宮博物院藏瓷．盛世清瓷》，北京，1994年，頁215。
