A DOG IN A LANDSCAPE

signed with monogram JW (lower right)

oil on panel

14 3/8 by 12 7/8 in.

36.5 by 32.7 cm

The monogram in this painting is consistent with the signature Jan Wijnants has used in other works, specifically the distinct curvature of the letter J (1). Although other dog portraits by Wijnants are not known today, and this work is not considered autograph by Klaus Eisele, it is likely that this one-of-a-kind painting was a commission. We are grateful to Fred Meijer and Frits Duparc for suggesting an attribution to Jan Wijnants after firsthand inspection.
