Description

A PAIR OF CHINESE EXPORT ARMORIAL PLATES, QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD, CIRCA 1760

painted in the center with the arms of Aulnette du Vautent, supported by two lions and below a marquis' coronet

diameter 9 1/8 in.; 23.2 cm

Henry Moog, Atlanta

A teapot from the same service is illustrated in David Howard and John Ayers, China for the West, Vol. II, London, 1978, cat. no. 451, where the authors note that there were more than a dozen families in France recorded with these arms but only one was created a marquis. For further discussion see Antoine Lebel, Armoiries françaises et suisses sur la porcelain de Chine au XXVIIIe siècle, Brussels, 2009, p. 99, where the owner of the service is identified as Louis-Marthurin Aulnette du Vautenet (1721-99).
