THE TEMPTATION OF ST. ANTHONY (HOLLSTEIN 10; NEW HOLLSTEIN (THE VAN DOETECUM FAMILY) 216)
Etching and engraving, 1561, a fine impression of this rare print, New Hollstein's only state, printing with rich contrasts and clarity, by Joannes and Lucas van Doetecum, published by Hieronymus Cock, on paper with a Letters in a Shield watermark (cf. Briquet 9838), unframed
sheet: 332 by 427mm 13⅛ by 16¾in
Enthused by popular reading such as Jacobus de Varagine’s Golden Legend, Bosch painted St. Anthony on at least fifteen occasions. Stories of the tortured saint, who was plagued by Satan in the wilderness, appealed to the Early Netherlandish artist’s wild imagination. Printed by Northern Europe’s premier publishing house, this vivid work includes twenty-two scenes of temptation, each inspired by Bosch’s fantastical imagery.
This impression is superior to the Daniell impression at the British Museum (museum no. 1866,0407.42)
