Despite looking thoroughly contemporary, the satellite dime display, historically known as ‘Wandering Hours’, is actually rooted in history. First executed in the 17th century, the whimsical complication found in the UR-100V was originally conceived upon request of Pope Alexander VII as an alternative to his noisy conventional bedroom clock. The resulting solution was utterly unique, with the clock no longer using hands to tell the time, but a ‘digital’ time display using a series of three rotating discs, each containing 4 digits, which slowly traverse a sector of the watch indicating the minutes elapsed. At the end of the hour, the digit is replaced with the following disc on the other side of the scale.

Founded in 1997 as one of the first-wave independent brands, master watchmaker Felix Baumgartner and designer Martin Frei were fascinated by this ‘watch with no hands’ concept, and the ‘Wandering Hours’ complication has since become a staple of the brand. The present UR-100V is an Urwerk creation through and through, featuring a semi-skeletonised dial allowing for the satellite complication to be appreciated in full. Complimenting the futuristic aesthetic is a brutalist case design and matching bracelet, both crafted fully out of titanium.
