the octagonal pattern-welded sighted steel barrel cut with eleven grooves, richly decorated with inlaid gold including two inscriptions, with en-suite arched steel tall back-sight, the barrel with a maker's mark reading '’Ashiq Isma’il', the lock en-suite with brass replacement section and erased maker's mark, set in a walnut full stock inlaid with carved silver panels secured by tacks, one stamped with a maker's mark reading 'work of Muhammad Tahir', swelling faceted butt with walnut butt-plate, five silver barrel bands, several stamped with tughra and sah marks of Abdülhamid II (r.1876-1909), silver fore-end cap, button trigger, brass-tipped wooden ramrod

On the barrel: la ilahi illa allah tawakkultu ‘ala allah / sahib-i tashji mahmud agha
‘There is no god but God, I put my trust in God / the owner is the mason Mahmud Agha’
A miquelet lock rifle with comparable silver mounts and attributed to circa 1730 was sold at Christie’s, London, 7 April 2011, lot 366. The late nineteenth or early twentieth century date of the tughra stamps on the barrel bands indicate that the gun has been refurbished at which time the bands were added.
