Description

the steel chanfron gently fluted and carved with five arabesque patterns within cartouches, the larger cartouche at the forehead inscribed with part of Qur’an 61:13’, ‘Help from God and a speedy victory’, saz-leaves over the eyes, numerous old rivets remain.

A chanfron with a similar profile and vertical fluting is in the Furusiyya collection, dated by its inscription to 1388-1419. (Bashir Mohamed 2008, p.340, no.326). Another chanfron with similar vertical fluting but wider splaying of the lower section is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, dated to the sixteenth century (inv. no.276-1898).
