These candelabra have long been referred to as “pomegranate” pattern because the round stems were mistakenly perceived as pomegranates; however, the stems are actually in the form of poppy capsules. They were designed by Georg Jensen in 1919, shortly after the end of World War I. The poppy is a symbol of remembrance of the First World War, due to the war poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae which refers to poppies growing among the graves of war victims in a region of Belgium.
