While many watch enthusiasts recognize Patek Philippe's expertise in crafting repeating timepieces, its perpetual calendar is a standout feature that has significantly contributed to the brand's success and remains a crucial complication in many of its iconic collections today. The legendary reference 3448, the first automatic perpetual calendar wristwatch, was produced from 1962 to 1981 and has proven its lasting appeal through numerous record-setting auction results. The reference 3940, which came later, followed in the footsteps of this iconic model.
Although the reference 3940 isn't the first automatic perpetual calendar, it is equipped with an impressive movement. Powered by the ultra-thin perpetual calendar calibre 240, which includes a micro-rotor, this movement is a remarkable achievement in micro-engineering. It has laid the groundwork for other outstanding timepieces, such as the Patek Philippe Nautilus Reference 5740, and has also influenced movements used in minute repeaters. The current platinum example is from the early second series, featuring a solid case back and hallmarks stamped on the case band.
