The history of the Speedmaster dates back to 1957, when it was launched as a sports and racing chronograph. However, it soon caught the attention of NASA and became renowned as the "first watch worn on the moon." In 1980, Omega launched the 'Apollo XI' as a tribute to the flight re-qualification conducted by NASA in 1978 for the Space Shuttle program. The "Apollo XI" was produced from 1980 to 1988, with approximately 300 units made in yellow gold, identified by the reference BA 345.0802. It was the first Speedmaster to feature a sapphire crystal case back. The case back bezel is inscribed with "First watch worn on the moon" along with the serial number. Through the case back, the manual-winding chronograph movement caliber 861 L is visible.
