Judge Edgar Bromberger (1889-1956) spent his life in service of the city of New York, eventually serving as the City’s chief magistrate from 1945 to 1950. Amassing a remarkable collection of Chinese art, he opted to bequeath a number of his most important pieces to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, including a large Yuan dynasty porcelain bodhisattva (accession no. 51.166), in memory of his late mother Augusta.

Because this lot was imported into the United States after September 1, 2020, it is subject to an import tariff of 7.5% of the value declared upon entry into the United States.
