Portrait of Louis XV

Oil on canvas

130,5 x 100,5 cm ; 51⅜ by 39⅝ in.

Pierre Gobert, who was born into a family of French sculptors, was a highly successful court portrait painter in the last years of Louis XIV’s reign and during the Regency.

This portrait of Louis XV, still a child, was probably painted during the Regency: Philippe II, Duc d'Orléans and the King’s uncle, was regent from 1715 to 1723. Louis XV was only five years old when his great-grandfather, Louis XIV, died in 1715.

Another version of this painting, now lost, was once in the Château de Misy-sur-Yonne in the collection of the Sinety family.
