Patrona Halil
Oil on canvas
180,4 x 127 cm ; 71 by 50 in.
This powerful painting with its astonishing iconography probably portrays Patrona Halil.
Albanian by birth, Horpeşteli Arnavut Halil, subsequently called Patrona (Vice-admiral) by his Albanian compatriots, was an Istanbul merchant who mostly worked in a Hammam. In 1730, he led several thousand Janissaries against Sultan Ahmed III, causing his fall and replacement with Mahmud I.
The rebellion was short-lived and Halil was executed on 25 November 1730, along with all the Janissaries who had followed him.
