In this composition by François Diday, the representation of nature’s physical force incorporates a noble serenity that contrasts with the mysticism of Alexandre Calame’s works.

Waterfalls are a recurrent theme in Diday’s painting. Here, the bird’s eye view accentuates the water’s verticality, while the craggy terrain and the steep rocks only allow a limited view of the slightly cloudy sky.
