Description
Follower of Giuseppe Arcimboldo
Allégory of Autumn
Oil on canvas
64,5 x 50,8 cm ; 25⅜ by 20 in.
Anonymous sale, Piguet Hôtel des Ventes, Geneva, 5 June 2024, lot 2566.
This allegory of autumn, made by a follower of Arcimboldo, is inspired by the Milanese artist’s celebrated series of the Four Seasons, painted between 1563 and 1573 in honour of Emperor Maximilian II and the Holy Roman Empire. In this phytomorphic and anthropomorphic portrait, combining vegetal and natural elements, the artist blends – like Arcimboldo – northern Mannerism and the caricatural tradition originating with Leonardo.
