Anonymous sale, Florence, Pandolfini, 11 October 2011, lot 170;
Acquired subsequently by the present owner.
This vivid and beautifully rendered still life is a characteristic work by Bartolomeo Bimbi, a Florentine painter active at the court of Cosimo III de’ Medici (1642–1723) and his son Ferdinando de’ Medici (1663–1713). This painting is closely related to a series of outdoor still lifes of various sizes, dating to the final years of the seventeenth century, executed for Ferdinando de’ Medici for his villa at Poggio a Caiano. The closest in size and execution—similarly depicting an assortment of fruit on a rocky outcrop in a landscape with birds—are a pair of canvases preserved in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence.1
The attribution to Bartolomeo Bimbi was endorsed by Alberto Cottino when the work was previously offered for sale in 2011.
