Description

wood stand (2)

Height 43 cm, 16⅞ in.

Christie's London, 12th December 1970, lot 101.

Standing boldly with a subtle bend in the hips, the present figure is typical of the expressive Buddhist sculpture of the late Tang and Song dynasties. Compare a larger standing bodhisattva with similar headdress, thickly rendered robes and graceful poise, preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, illustrated in Wisdom Embodied: Chinese Buddhist and Daoist Sculpture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, fig. A41; an armless seated figure in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Sculptures in the Collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, 2014, pl. 192; and a figure of similar size and style standing on a lotus pedestal from the Page Cross collection, sold in our New York rooms, 3rd June 1976, lot 301.
