Le Triomphe de Silène (Triumph of Silenus)

signed: CARRiER-BELLEUSE

bronzed patinated terracotta

57 by 42cm., 16½ by 22½ in.

Le Triomphe de Silène depicts the Greek deity Silenus, associated with wine, drunkenness, exuberance and the pleasures of life, seated on a donkey and surrounded by bacchantes and putti. The lively modelling of the figures and ambitious composition are indicative of Carrier-Belleuse's noteworthy skill in handling terracotta. Another example was offered in these rooms, Sotheby's London, 9 July 2004, lot 152.
