Jean Marie Antoine Idrac trained with Alexandre Falguière and exhibited regularly at the Paris salon from 1877. His sensuous Salammbô is considered as one of his most defining sculptures. He first exhibited the model in plaster in the Paris Salon of 1881 (no. 3991). In the Salon of the following year, he included a marble version (no. 4492), which was exhibited in the Musée du Luxembourg, Paris. A gilt-bronze cast sold in these rooms on 12 July 2017, lot 17 (£40,000 aggregate).
