Madame Récamier after Jacques-Louis David
signed: G. Gambogi
alabaster and onyx, gilt wood
marble: 51.5 by 74cm., 20¼ by 29in.
chaise: 45.5 by 87cm., 18 by 34¼ in.
This gloriously exuberant alabaster and gilt wood group follows Jacques-Louis David's celebrated 1800 portrait of the Parisian socialite Juliette Récamier in the musée du Louvre, Paris. The use of gilt wood for the daybed perfectly evokes David's celebrated composition, whilst the use of alabaster for the exposed skin recalls the sitter's famous beauty. The present group represents a perfect fusion of neoclassicism with belle époque flair.
