A Galician Parcel-Gilt Silver Torah Crown, Maker’s Mark J S in Script Monogram, also Stamped 12, Circa 1810-20


the gilt base band applied with two openwork friezes of cast decoration divided by die-rolled foliage,- the lower of pairs of spread-wing birds facing each other, and the upper of formal foliage in strapwork, the  rim applied with gilt spread-wing eagles( one missing) between six lions rampant reguardant spaced by six gilt bells hung from chased leaves, the top applied with an inscribed gilt band below a canopy supported by six gilt griffons, the finial in the form of a spread eagle rising from a ball and leaves, marked on base band

The inscription reads: "Crown of Torah, Crown of Priesthood, Crown of Kingship in the year 55 ? 8," the third number apparently altered from the equivalent date 1828 to 17


A Hanukkah lamp by this maker is in the Jewish Museum, New York, ( JM 8-67), illustrated Susan Braunstein, Five Centuries of Hanukkah Lamps from the Jewish Museum, no 347, p 280, mark p 361.


Two comparable crowns are in the same collection, D52 and M391, Rafi Grafman, Crowning Glory, Silver Torah Ornaments of the Jewish Museum, New York, nos. 469 and 470, pp. 273 and 270.
