Cooper lived for several years in Flanders in the late 1820s, where he studied with Eugène Joseph Verboeckhoven. His early works such as this small panel demonstrate the strong influence of seventeenth century Dutch and Flemish painters which he would have encountered during his time in the Low Countries, particularly the work of Paulus Potter.
