A pale celadon jade lobed censer and cover

Qing dynasty, 18th / early 19th century 

清十八 / 十九世紀初 青白玉雕花卉紋花耳海棠式盤龍鈕蓋爐


the quadrilobed body resting on four ruyi-form feet, set with two rounded openwork handles carved in the form of lush peony blossom clusters, the body carved in low relief with blooming floral sprays, all below a domed cover with three stylized bats against an archaistic kuilong scroll, surmounted by a pierced coiled dragon-form finial, the stone a bright celadon-white (2) 


Width 6 ½ in., 16.5 cm

Collection of Mrs. Walter N. Rothschild (1896-1987).

Gifted to the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, in 1963 (acc. no. 63.6.2).
