Boston metalsmith Frank J. Marshall was highly regarded for his superb technical skills in producing copper boxes distinguished by their enameled designs. Trained by Arts & Crafts designer Laurin Hovey Martin, Marshall's career advanced in 1907 when he became a member of Boston's Society of Arts and Crafts, and by 1913 he had earned the distinction of Master Craftsman. The present box features one of his favorite motifs, a peacock set against a fantastical landscape. The level of detail and vibrancy of color achieved in such a small surface area exemplify Marshall's mastery of enameling.
