This autumn, the Sotheby’s Hong Kong Chinese Paintings Auction will offer more than 200 works of modern painting and calligraphy. Highlights of this season’s sale include a series of landscapes by 20th century masters of the genre: Huang Binhong’s 1940s painting Studio Amid Majestic Mountains, Wu Hufan’s blue-green fine-brush painting Verdant Mountains in Morning Mist, Xie Zhiliu’s Song-inspired Mountain Recluse in Solitude, and Chen Shaomei’s exquisite gongbi painting Landscape After Guo Xi. Zhang Daqian’s significant blue-green masterpiece Quiet Autumn on a Sichuan River, painted from an unusual aerial perspective just before the master left China, depicts an expansive vista that makes the landscape feel so near yet so far away. Collectively, these works present a panoramic view of twentieth century landscape painting.

The sale will bring together works, many offered for the first time, from several important private collections from around the world, including Hong Kong textile pioneer Y. C. Wang’s collection of works by Zhang Daqian and Pu Ru, the Yayasan Lim Yee Hoh Collection, and a Brazilian private collection. The auction will also feature beautiful and diverse works by twentieth century masters, some of which have been shown in important exhibitions, such as ink and wash painting Trees and sketch Tree Roots from Wu Guanzhong, Still Life by Lin Fengmian, and a number of splashed-ink works from Zhang Daqian’s creative peak in the 1960s and 1970s.

今秋，香港蘇富比中國書畫拍賣呈獻近現代書畫作品逾二百幅，本場焦點，乃一系列民國時期山水傑構，皆畫家畢生力作，包括黃賓虹四十年代精繪〈青山晉壽圖〉、吳湖帆青綠細筆〈曉雲碧嶂〉、謝稚柳仿宋〈山水清音〉，及窮工筆細寫之極致的陳少梅〈仿郭河陽山水〉。其中，張大千罕有地以飛機「俯瞰」角度取景，寫成〈江山無盡〉青綠山水巨製，氣象恢宏，呈咫尺千里之勢，乃畫家去國前夕所出，別具意義。合視之，蔚為廿世紀畫壇山水大觀。

同場雲集多項重要海內外私人收藏，如香港紡織業前輩王雲程藏「南張北溥」精品、馬來西亞著名僑領林維和藏名家書畫、巴西私人藏畫等，多為首度面世。亦及二十世紀名家之作，如吳冠中彩墨〈林〉及速寫〈樹根〉等，林風眠〈靜物〉，以及多幀張大千寫於六、七十年代創作高峰期之潑彩作品，燦然奪目，面貌多樣，部份曾於重要展覽亮相，尤為難得。
