Description
[BINDINGS]
Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso). Opera. Daniel Heinsivs textum recensuit. Leiden: Elzevir, 1629
3 vols., 12mo (4 3/4 x 3 in.; 121 x 76 mm). Engraved title with portrait vignette in volume 1, engraved initials and tailpieces throughout; occasional minor browning. Fine contemporary full-red morocco bindings by Macé Ruette, spines gilt in 5 compartments, covers with elaborate losange-ecoincons design with eight-cornered gilt-tooled lozenges with gilt centerpieces, gilt borders, edges gilt, gilt dentelles, marbled pastedowns; minimal wear. Half red morocco clamshell cases.
A fine set of bindings by Macé Ruette (1584–1638), who served as Relieur du Roi from 1634 till his death four years later. It is likely that the present set of bindings was done for Habert de Montmort (1600–1679). As a young man, Montmort purchased freshly published Elzevir editions and commissioned bindings for them from Ruette.
