LINCOLN, ABRAHAM
Document signed ("Abraham Lincoln") as sixteenth president, being a military commission for Rufus H. Johnson
Engraved broadside on vellum (17 1/2 x 12 3/4 in.; 445 x 324 mm), accomplished in a clerical hand, Washington, 24 December 1861, appointing Rufus H. Johnson a "Brigade Surgeon of Volunteers," countersigned by the Secretary of War ("Simon Cameron"), embossed blue paper seal, martial vignettes by J. V. N. and C. H. Throop at head and foot, recording docket; docket and accomplishment a bit faded, some light soiling and wrinkling. Matted. — Accompanied by Private Charles Carter's Certificate of Honorable Service with the 146th Regiment of the Ohio National Guard, 15 December 1864, accomplished in a clerical hand with facsimile signatures of Lincoln and Stanton. Matted, framed, and glazed.
Rufus H. Johnson was appointed a Brigade Surgeon with the rank of Major with the Ohio Volunteers. He resigned his commission after just over a year's service.
