A Pair of George II Mahogany Hall Settees, Circa 1740
the panelled serpentine backs with scrolled central crest and foliate-decorated sides above outscrolled arms; the rails carved with Vitruvian scrolls and rosettes on four front and three rear cabriole legs terminating in pad feet; inscribed in chalk to undersides E3540, slight variations in height, width and carving of backs
height 46 ¼ in. and 45 ½ in.; width 87 in. and 86 ½ in.; depth 27 ½ in.

Possibly supplied to Thomas Foley, 2nd Baron Foley (d. 1766) for the Entrance Hall at Witley Court, Worcestershire, thence by descent at Witley until purchased with the house in 1837 by William, Lord Ward, later 1st Earl of Dudley (1817-1885);
Or alternatively supplied to John Ward, 1st Viscount Dudley and 6th Baron Ward (1704-1774) at Himley Hall, Staffordshire in the Mid-18th Century, thence by descent to William Ward and transferred to Witley Court before 1882;
Sold with the House in 1920 to Sir Herbert Smith Bt. (1872-1943);
