Description

A Silver Havdalah Compendium with Rabbinical Presentation Inscription, probably Šiauliai (modern Lithuania), dated 1904

typical form with angled square base and matching drawer, candle holder sliding on supports with large ball finials, the base with Hebrew presentation inscription, apparently unmarked

Height 8 in. (20.4 cm)

Engraved in Hebrew on the base: “[Given] to the local rabbinic authority, the ga’on Meir Atlas, by the holy community of Šiauliai in Lithuania on the eve of Sukkot [5]665 [September 23, 1904].”

Meir Atlas (1848-1926) was an outstanding leader in Lithuania who cofounded a famous yeshivah in Telšiai and was appointed rabbi of Šiauliai (Shavel in Yiddish) in 1904. It would appear that the present lot was a gift to him from his new community at the beginning of his rabbinic tenure there. In 1909, 56% of the population of Šiauliai was Jewish.
