An Austrian Silver Esther Scroll Case, late 19th century
in 17th century style, chased and engraved with Scenes from the Story of Esther, ball and eagle finial, the pull with arch enclosing two squirrels facing a ball, marked at both ends, fitted with a scroll
Length 10¼in. (26 cm)
Decorated with various scenes from the book of Esther: the coronation of Esther, labeled “So he set a royal diadem on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti” (2:7); Mordechai refusing to bow to Haman; the Jews celebrating, labeled “The Jews enjoyed light and gladness, happiness and honor” (8:16); Haman leading Mordechai on horseback, labeled “This is what is done for the man whom the king desires to honor!” (6:9); Esther having an audience with Ahasuerus, labeled “The king extended the golden scepter to Esther” (8:4); Ahasuerus being read to in bed; Haman being hanged, labeled “‘Hang him on it!’ the king ordered. So they hanged Haman” (7:9-10).
