Edo period, 18th century
the red lacquered ressei mempo [face mask with fierce expression] forged with deep wrinkles, flared nostrils and open mouth, detachable nose plate, long yak hair moustache and chin tuft, black lacquer teeth, red lacquer interior, five tiered yodaregake [throat protector] with kebiki odoshi [close-spaced lacing] in pale green braid, the lowest tier applied with silvered yotsume mon [quadruple eye crests], possibly later in date, the illustrated fitted black metal stand is sold with this lot
