Formerly in the collection of Captain Vivian Hewitt (1888-1965), aviator, ornithologist and conservationist.
Vivian Hewitt (1888–1965) was a pioneering Welsh aviator who, on 26 April 1912, successfully completed a flight between Holyhead and Phoenix Park, Dublin. Although widely feted as the first man to cross the Irish sea in an airplane, the feat had in fact been achieved by Denys Corbett Wilson four days prior who flew from Goodwick in Pembrokeshire to Enniscorthy. Hewitt was also a distinguished ornithologist and established a bird sanctuary at his home of Bryn Aber at Cemlyn Bay, Anglesey and which is now managed by the North Wales Wildlife Trust.
